Female assets across the country now threatened by dangerous fashion illness

In the dreary depths of essays and exams, it’s hard to imagine anything that could endanger our enjoyment of long, warm summer days.

However, there lies a dark underbelly (or should I say underbum) to summertime, one that threatens the young women of Britain – the bum cheek epidemic.

Trend forecasters noted this worrying infection during spring/summer 2011, but despite the valiant efforts of relief teams such as DSF (Denim Sans Frontiers) and the Derrière Protection Movement, the contagious disease had spread even further by June 2012.

Reports now indicate that 2013 will be fatal for the self-respect of British women.

The epidemic was in full-swing on The Tab’s recent visit to Parklife, with bum cheeks as far as the eye could see. Observe.

Parklife bum #1

A recent mutation of this malady has caused it to become increasingly resistant to weather, with specialists now at a loss as to what can be done to halt its spread.

Often, the disease begins innocently enough; the bum cheeks begin to appear from beneath the fabric, but the poor victim remains blissfully unaware of the peril they are in.

Parklife bum #2

However, this malady quickly begins to spread. As an airborne disease, carried by American Apparel adverts and Rihanna’s Instagram, it’s able to penetrate the stock of popular high street shops.

Victims are hypnotized into believing they will turn into a Terry Richardson fantasy, while any notions of discomfort and public embarrassment are eradicated from their thoughts.

Parklife bum #3

Just as J.M Charcot explored the rapid spread of hysteria among nineteenth-century French nuns, the group mentality among modern females allows the bum cheek epidemic to infiltrate even the most modest of friendship circles.

Once one poor girl is struck down, the rest will surely follow. Whole wardrobes of shorts weep as they are brutally cut down to the bare minimum in the quest for trend domination.

Parklife bums #4 & #5

One troubling question remains – where will this end? The Society for the Protection of Decency has been petitioning relentlessly to try and raise awareness, but this epidemic shows no signs of slowing.

Concerns have been raised by voices within the international textile industry as it faces declining demand for denim, a move that could cripple the economic stability of many developing nations.

Parklife bums #6, #7 & #8

Thankfully, there’s a beacon of hope as leading fashion industry figures have planned a summit for September 2013, to discuss and co-ordinate efforts to eliminate this horrifying epidemic for good.

Industry insiders suggest the bum cheeks may be combated by a proliferation of long johns on the September fashion week catwalks.

In the meantime, remain vigilant. Bum cheek-itis can strike when least expected.

We went to Parklife in Manchester and this is what it was like

Parklife: what was once a small festival in Manchester this year grew into something much bigger.

The weekend-long festival’s move from its home in Platt Fields (just round the corner from Manchester Uni) to the huge Heaton Park caused uproar among the students who had made it their own.

But the naysayers were silenced as the phenomenal weekend event saw 40,000 guests from around the country enjoy sounds, sunburn and much dubious sniffing.

Heaton Park provided the perfect location, with its vast expanse of green space, woodland areas and Corinthian columns, which added a faux-historic twist to the VIP area.

VIP Area. Swanky!

For those who had an appetite or had accidentally spilled their precious powder in the portaloos, grub such as pulled pork rolls, brioche bun burgers, pad thai and the usual festival classics were provided by food stalls stalls from We Are Castro, Almost Famous, Manna and many more.

We Are Castro

Some teething problems were apparent in last-minute line-up alterations and tedious taxi queues, but it’s clear Parklife has now entered into the international festival circuit alongside student summer music staples such as Outlook and Hideout in Croatia.

Now Wave Stage

Fans enjoyed a range of music from artists such as Plan B, Example, Rita Ora, The Maccabees, Disclosure, Iggy Azelea, Rudimental, Erol Alkan, The Horrors, The Temper Trap, Shy FX, Joker, Benga, Todd Terje, Toddla T, Julio Bashmore, and Cyril Hahn among many others and across a host of stages and tents.

Iggy Azalea

Joker

Rita Ora

It being Manchester, home-grown artists were strongly represented.

The legendary Johnny Marr showed up, as did Riot Jazz, Warehouse Project residents Rich Reason and Will Tramp, and DJ sets from Juicy and Gold Teeth.

Gold Teeth DJ Will Maradas enjoys a cocktail or two in VIP

Thanks to the Parklife team and Full Fat PR for their help and support.

Tip number one: Get free tickets to Reading or Leeds. We've got them to give away.

We’ve teamed up with Reading and Leeds Festivals to give you the ultimate guide to doing a summer music festival on the cheap. And we’re giving away a pair for each festival.

To win, simply share this image on Facebook by June 28. And if you miss out, you can always get tickets here. Here’s how to do it cheaply:

Travel

National Express does cheap coaches, but the hardcore option is hitch hiking. If you’re scared you’ll be kidnapped, try super-trustworthy goCarShare. You’ll have to pay petrol money, but it beats waking up in a cold bath with both kidneys removed.

Tent

Unless you fancy one of those coffin-shaped one person tents, we recommend heading to Tesco, who are flogging temporary polyethylene homes (tents) for as little as £8. If you’re really cutting costs, Poundland have got an ‘emergency’ foil prism resembling a tent for – you guessed it – £1.

Music

You can get speakers for £7, but if you’re too cheap, just put your phone in a cup or shoe and turn that into a speaker. If the crowd demands more volume, try soundSYNK, an app which lets you play music off more than one phone at once.

Booze

Head straight to your supermarket’s cider selection – the brand you’re looking for is Frosty Jacks. Beloved of urine-soaked tramps, this high strength, three litre treat packs in an impressive 22 units for as little as £2.75.

Fighting the elements

You can only afford to defend against one type of weather, so check the forecast before you go. If it’s raining, this poncho from Poundland (we’re genuinely not being paid by them for all this publicity) will do the job. In fact, it would probably stop you getting burned in the sun too, but we’d still recommend this £4 Spiderman sun cream for that.

Bodily functions

You might not be splashing the cash, but you’ll need to spend a penny. Shewees are a luxury you can’t afford, but if you need a urine receptacle while you’re waiting for Alt-J, try Powerade bottles – they have much wider tops than other bottles. Borrow loo roll from other people, and get your condoms from the welfare tent.

The Tab is looking for writers and editors. This is why you should join us.

Come to our massive summer party with free booze and food for all Tab writers.

This year, it’s in a Thai-themed bar in London. Kind of like the Hangover Part II, but English.

Get free Tab stash. Everyone wants a piece of it.

We make top videos

And next year we’re going to make even more.

Our articles are seen by half a million readers every month

And we’ve been nominated at the Newspaper Awards and Online Media Awards

With your help, we might even win one soon.

We’ll get your stories into national newspapers

If you don’t believe us, take a look at the list.

And at a fairly popular website too (which we absolutely did not rip off for this article)…

15 of them have taken jobs in the national media since 2011. And they’ve written a few front pages along the way.

Is your uni 23rd best in the country, or 11th? The truth is, no one really knows.

On Monday, The Guardian released its university league table for 2014, dubbing it the ‘one to watch’ because ‘students base their decisions about which courses to apply for on the Guardian guide’.

Sorry, do they really? Aren’t uni league tables just a load of bollocks?

This year, Edinburgh students were left pretty miffed after little-known Heriot-Watt finished above them in The Guardian’s table. Edinburgh is ranked 32nd in the world. Heriot-Watt doesn’t even make the Top 200.

And Bristol, which everyone knows is a safe haven for Oxbridge-rejects, comes a lowly 23rd in The Guardian’s table. Yet both The Times and Sunday Times rank it 11th.

So we’ve chucked the four major UK league tables into a chart to come up with an average rank for each uni.

The data for The Times and Sunday Times is for the 2012/13 academic year, while The Guardian’s and Complete Uni Guide is for 2014, but it’s the most up-to-date we’ve got.

If all those numbers have you a bit cross-eyed, we’ve picked out some of the wilder variations in this handy graph.

Take a look at universities such as Surrey. It’s ranked in the Top Ten in one table, but doesn’t make the Top 20 in another.

What are you supposed to think if you study there? Is your university better than institutions such as Warwick and York? Or are you actually knocking around below Loughborough and Sussex?

Finally, compare The Times’ UK rankings with the Times Higher Education’s (THE) world rankings. We’ve stuck to unis with a Tab site for this chart, otherwise things get a bit long, but the discrepancy is easy to see.

Edinburgh lags behind eight other Tab unis in The Times, but only four in THE. It doesn’t make any sense!

It’s the handy website that points out exactly where your mouse is on the screen.

In reality, it’s close to being the world’s most pointless creation, but it provides 45 seconds of distraction all the same.

There’s someone to point our your pointer for every occasion, although the majority of characters do seem to be very drunk and at pretty lame parties. Observe.
